“They said it was beyond their control, so there’s nothing to claim.” Some circumstances, such as severe weather or certain air traffic control restrictions, can qualify as extraordinary circumstances. However, the airline must establish that the circumstances caused the cancellation and could not reasonably have been avoided.
What compensation can actually amount to
When compensation is due under EU passenger-rights rules, the amount generally depends on flight distance: up to €250 for flights of 1,500 km or less, up to €400 for flights over 1,500 km within the EU and certain other flights between 1,500 and 3,500 km, and up to €600 for longer flights.
In some cases, compensation can be reduced where suitable re-routing is offered and the passenger reaches the final destination within the applicable time limits.
